Shared Cars

The insurance program has been developed by Victor in consultation with the risk carrier(s) specifically for Dutch companies that provide electric cars through sharing platforms.

The market for shared cars consists of approximately 10,000 – 15,000 vehicles distributed among a limited number of providers. The largest providers are GreenWheels and MyWheel, followed by Sixt Share, ShareNow/Car2Go, and a few small (regional) providers. There is already evidence of consolidation, and the market appears to be shrinking. Many providers present themselves as larger than they actually are, as the number of 'available' vehicles in a region is an important selling point. SnappCar is a peer-to-peer shared car service where you "rent" a car from a private individual.

There are significant regional differences. In Amsterdam (with a concentration in the trendy 'Oud-West'), over 3,000 shared cars are in operation. Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht hover around 1,000 shared cars, followed mainly by university cities across the Netherlands with 50 or fewer cars. Additionally, in Amsterdam, there are about 600 individuals sharing their cars through SnappCar.

The market can be divided into the following segments:

• Zone-floating (parking permit in a specific area)
• Free-floating (parking permit throughout the city)

Furthermore, a distinction can be made between providers with a fixed location or variable location.

Within the 'fixed locations' segment, shared cars are primarily used (on average less than once a day) on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for longer distances and relatively more often for intercity travel. Free-floating without fixed locations are mainly used for visiting friends and family, picking up goods, and going to restaurants or events.
